MAINTAINING
EXTRA HEALTH IN THE COVID ERA
Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) is an infectious
disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a type of coronavirus. The absence of a vaccine
and definitive treatment for Covid-19 make predicted to prolong the pandemic,
so the country must prepare for a new balance in the lives of its people. According to Eman
Supriyatna (2020), the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019-2020
coronavirus outbreak as an International Public Health Emergency of
International Concern (PHEIC) on January 30, 2020.
It then continued
to become a pandemic on March 11, 2020. A pandemic is the spread of a new
disease or virus that has spread throughout the world, affecting many people.
Based on a study, the number who experienced crisis-level hunger reached 270
million in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic (CNN Indonesia,
2020). With this sudden change in conditions, the entire
world community has to adapt, which is a pretty big challenge.
The public must be able to return to their activities
in the Covid-19 pandemic situation by adapting to new habits that are
healthier, cleaner, and more obedient. Preventing the spread of Covid-19 can be
done by taking several actions, first always maintaining a safe distance from
others because the virus spreads conveniently through physical contact from
person to person, at least can maintain a distance of 1 meter. Second, wearing
a medical face mask in a public space helps protect you and the people around
you because one of the main ways that Covid-19 spreads are through respiratory
droplets that people expel when they sing, cough, talk, or sneeze. Many people
don’t show symptoms meaning some people can be contagious and not even realize
it. Third, washing hands regularly is one of the most effective ways to prevent
the spread of the virus with other prevention spread of Covid-19, primarily
between people through direct and indirect (through contaminated objects or
surfaces). Fourth, avoid crowded places because the virus in the poorly
ventilated and crowded indoors remain suspended in the air or travels farther
than 1 meter. Fifth, reduce mobility when there is no urgent need to be done
outside, preferably stay at home.
In addition to
implementing the health protocol for the prevention of Covid-19, it is also
important to carry out vaccinations, getting vaccinated can lower your risk of
getting and spreading the virus that causes Covid-19. Vaccination Covid-19 has been
recognized by the government and even requires vaccination for various travel
conditions. The government is very serious about tackling the Covid-19 pandemic,
starting to carry out emergency PPKM on July 3, 2021, to make efforts to import
the Covid-19 vaccine which is used by all Indonesian people to pursue the Herd
Immunity figure, which is at 70%. Vaccines which consist of various biological
products and parts of attenuated viruses that are injected into humans will
stimulate the emergence of a person's immune or immune system.
In addition to
implementing health protocols and also vaccinations, we also have to balance
nutritional needs. Eating nutritious foods is very important to build a strong
immune system to protect against viral infections and provide extra protection
for the body. In meeting nutritional needs, it is necessary to pay attention to
staple foods which are a source of carbohydrates, such as rice, corn, potatoes,
tubers, and side dishes which are a source of protein and minerals. Animal side
dishes include meat, fish, chicken, and eggs. Vegetable side dishes include
tofu, tempeh, and beans, as well as vegetables and fruit which are sources of
vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Especially colorful vegetables and fruits
contain lots of vitamins and function as antioxidants, namely vitamins A, C,
and E, and don't forget to drink 8 glasses of water/per day. In addition, it is
also necessary to maintain a sleep pattern. An interesting finding was later
revealed through research in Canada, from the study it was found that more than
50% of the 5000 study subjects had experienced significant sleep problems since
the pandemic began (Robillard et al., 2021). Meanwhile, another study showed an
increase in the use of sleeping pills by 16% of the 1005 people included in the
study, and in that study, 41% were new users of sleeping pills since the
lockdown began (Beck, Léger, Fressard, Peretti-Watel, & Verger, 2020) (Beck
et al., 2020). So it is necessary to apply a regular sleep pattern, where
adequate sleep is ideally for 8 hours. To support an ideal sleep pattern, it is
also necessary to have regular exercise. Several research results also show
that exercise or physical activity can prevent mental disorders experienced by
some people due to the implementation of quarantine and isolation, as well as
physical distancing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Taking
care of health very extra is a must at this time, whereby implementing all
existing protocols as well as balancing it with vaccination and maintaining a
healthy lifestyle helps the government also in reducing the positive number of
Covid-19. With the decline in Covid-19 cases, it is hoped that all conditions
from various fields can return to normal.
